ZÊZERE GLACIAR VALLEY DOWNHILL BY BIKE.
Located in the heart of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the Zêzere Glacier Valley is one of the most important landmarks of the end of the glacial time, that occurred 20,000 years ago in Portugal. This U-shaped valley is one of Portugal's greatest natural wonders.
This bike tour starts at Covão D’Ametade, located at 1440 meters, has a length of about 11 km and ends in Manteigas, 710 meters above sea level. During this track, always in a downward direction, you’ll be able to enjoy, without effort, all the beauty of this place.
By bicycle, you’ll be involved in a great tranquility scenario, surrounded by mountains, with the “sound of music” promoted by many waterfalls and sheeps.
You’ll be able to taste the fresh water of the Paulo Martins fountain, see the whole surrounding landscape from different perspectives, where the Cântaro Gordo, Cântaro Magro and Cântaro Raso, 3 monumental rock formations, have great prominence.
Continuing cycling you’ll pass by small traditional houses (Cortes), built with local stones to give shelter to the shepherds. You’ll also find, in this whole area, gigantic loose stones that 20,000 years ago were dragged with the force of the ice.
Before starting the last part of your tour, you’ll have the opportunity to stop and take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of the Zêzere River.
In the end, when you arrive in Manteigas, you can sit on a pleasant terrace, taste the wonderful local cheese and drink a beer or glass of Portuguese wine.
