Cycling from Lisbon to Arrábida: Beaches, Nature and Authentic Portugal.

In this post, I want to share one of my favorite bike trips — a route that starts in Lisbon and ends in Setúbal.

It’s a journey that blends green mountains (Arrábida Natural Park) with the deep blue of the Atlantic, passes some of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal (Caparica, Meco, Coelha, Galapos, Portinho da Arrábida, Figueirinha), and stays away from most tourist routes. That’s probably why it remains calm and uncrowded.

It’s a constant contrast of landscapes and rhythms — perfect to experience on two wheels. A ride that allows you to disconnect from city life and everyday stress.

Because it’s so close to Lisbon and one of my favorite routes, I’ve ridden it many times: alone, with family, friends, and occasionally with guests.

  1. Lisbon → Belém: A Final Look at the City

The journey starts early, with Lisbon slowly waking up.

Cycling along the Tagus River in the soft morning light is always special — a transition moment between urban life and the adventure ahead.

After passing through the city center, Belém marks the last major urban area.

Surrounded by iconic monuments, it’s the perfect place for a short stop: coffee, a Pastel de Belém, and energy for what comes next — the ferry across the river.

  1. Crossing the Tagus: Belém → Trafaria

The ferry ride from Belém to Trafaria takes about 20 minutes, but it’s more than just transportation.

From the river, you get a unique view of Lisbon’s landmarksMAAT, the Discoveries Monument, and Belém Tower.

The city slowly fades behind us, the Tagus opens wide, and on the other side begins a quieter, more open, more Atlantic landscape.

Once we arrive in Trafaria, everything changes. The sea breeze, the silence, and a slower rhythm take over.

  1. Trafaria to Caparica: Endless Beaches and the Fossil Cliff

From here, one of the most enjoyable sections begins.

Beaches stretch endlessly:

  • Cova do Vapor
  • São João
  • Costa da Caparica
  • Fonte da Telha

At Fonte da Telha, the scenery changes again. This is where the Fossil Cliff of Costa da Caparica begins — a striking geological formation where reddish earth contrasts with the deep blue of the Atlantic.

Cycling close to the sea, with the sound of waves always present, is the moment you truly realize: traveling by bike simply feels right.

  1. Caparica → Meco → Sesimbra: From the Open Atlantic to a Fishing Village

After Fonte da Telha, with its beach restaurants, the route leads toward Meco.

Meco Beach, with a lagoon on one side and wild ocean on the other, is one of the highlights of the first day. Open, bright, powerful — it’s hard to describe, impossible to forget.

From here, the terrain begins to rise. Even with electric bikes, the climbs become more noticeable — and they certainly help build an appetite for dinner.

Sesimbra appears as the perfect place to end the day: a charming fishing village with a lively harbor, simple and authentic restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere that invites you to stay.

After a long day and a delicious fresh fish dinner by the sea, sleep (Hotel do Mar) comes easily.

  1. Sesimbra → Arrábida → Setúbal: Where Mountains Meet the Sea

Day two starts with breakfast facing the ocean — pure energy for another unforgettable ride.

After a short ride through Sesimbra, we enter Arrábida Natural Park.

The road winds through the mountains, offering breathtaking views that constantly invite you to stop — for photos, videos, or simply to take it all in.

Press here and check  the crystal waters, green vegetation, and white limestone cliffs create a landscape that feels almost unreal.

Some climbs are demanding, even with electric assistance, but every pedal stroke is rewarded with some of the most stunning scenery in Portugal.

The descent toward Arrábida’s beaches is pure joy — a mix of awe, gratitude, and freedom.

After a memorable lunch at one of the beaches — Galapos, Figueirinha, Coelha, or Portinho da Arrábida — the final stretch follows the coastline to Setúbal.

With the Sado River ahead and a deep sense of accomplishment, the toast comes naturally: life is beautiful.

Why This Trip Is Special:

  • Combines city, river, ocean, and mountains
  • Passes some of the most beautiful beaches near Lisbon
  • Offers a mix of calm sections and moderate challenges
  • Includes a unique ferry crossing
  • Ends with the unforgettable Arrábida landscape

Here, the bike isn’t just transportation — it’s the key to experiencing the land with time, depth, and authenticity.

A Journey to Remember

This is one of those routes that stays with you.

Not because of the distance, but because of the diversity.

Not because of speed, but because it forces you to slow down, observe, and feel.

From Lisbon to Arrábida, pedal by pedal, you realize that cycling is not just a way of traveling — it’s a way of being in the world.

Note: I usually do this trip in 2 days, but if you have time and don’t know the region well, I highly recommend doing it in 3 days. That way, you can also include a kayak tour in Sesimbra — the perfect complement to the journey.
