Cycling Portugal – Monsanto

Some journeys don’t end when the ride is over. They simply lead us somewhere new.

After cycling through Penha Garcia, surrounded by mountains, ancient fossils and the remarkable landscapes of the Naturtejo Geopark, we continued our journey across the Portuguese countryside towards Monsanto.

Just a few kilometres away, a completely different landscape was waiting for us.

Perched on a mountainside and shaped around enormous granite boulders, Monsanto seems almost to have grown from the rock itself. Here, houses, narrow streets and centuries of history blend naturally into the landscape.

We approached the village by bike, riding along quiet roads and through wide-open countryside before entering its narrow streets and climbing as far as our bicycles could take us.

From there, we continued on foot towards the castle, high above the surrounding plains.

And then came the way back down — the perfect ending to another day of exploration on two wheels.

Another journey, another story and another remarkable place to add to our Cycling Portugal series — and perhaps some inspiration for your next cycling adventure.

Press play and ride with us through Monsanto.
