Cycling the Portuguese Coastal Way to Santiago.

Departure from Viana do Castelo

The Portuguese Coastal Way to Santiago is where the sea and land meet in perfect harmony.

We began in Viana do Castelo, spending the night in a cosy hotel (Pousada de Viana do Castelo) on a mountaintop, next to the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia.

Waking up in that magical place, with a breathtaking view, filled us with energy and enthusiasm to begin this cycling journey.

Viana do Castelo is a charming city, with magnificent century-old buildings — some clad in traditional tiles — and a setting where the river meets the salty scent of the Atlantic.

At sunrise, we pedalled through its historic streets, with the sound of our wheels blending with the waves.

By the Atlantic

We followed the coastline, always accompanied by the blues of the sky and sea, and the shimmering sunlight. Along the way, golden beaches, fishing villages, and dramatic cliffs unfolded before us.

The salty breeze and the scent of the ocean led us past seaside cafés and solitary lighthouses.

Highlights of the first day, besides the unforgettable landscapes and the charm of Viana do Castelo, included Moledo Beach — where we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Maria Moledo restaurant — and the friendly town of Caminha, located at the mouth of the Minho River, which separates Spain from Portugal.

Entering Galicia

On the second day, with the help of a small boat, we crossed the Minho River and entered Galicia.

The first kilometres still hugged the coastline, and the stop at the 13th-century Monastery of Santa María de Oia — with a welcoming restaurant (Tapería a Camboa) right next door — was a must.

After Baiona, a famous Spanish seaside village, the landscape changed: gentle hills appeared, along with wonderful forests and charming medieval villages.

With every kilometre, we encountered more pilgrims — on foot, by bicycle, and even on horseback — all sharing the same determination and joy. Each meeting was marked by the same greeting: "Bom Caminho"!

Arrival in Santiago

Cycling allowed us to feel every detail: the shifting light over the water, the scent of pine trees, the laughter of local people.

Some climbs demanded effort, but each summit revealed unforgettable views.

Arriving in Santiago de Compostela was an emotional moment!

To the sound of bagpipes, we entered the Praza do Obradoiro and, standing in front the Cathedral, we felt a mix of gratitude and achievement.

Without a doubt, it was an experience of a lifetime.

On two wheels, we found the perfect balance between challenge and beauty.

The Portuguese Coastal Way is more than a cycling trip — it is a journey through history, nature, and the human and spiritual connections along the way.
