How Do Free Bike Tours Work?

"How can a bike tour be free?"

This is probably one of the first questions many people ask when they discover our Free Bike Tours.

It is a perfectly natural question. We live in a world where people often say that "nothing is really free", so it is understandable that some visitors may be a little sceptical when they see the word "Free".

After all, bicycles come with costs — purchasing, maintenance and storage — a guide dedicates several hours to each tour, and the whole experience requires organisation and planning.

So, naturally, some people wonder whether there is a "catch" or some hidden cost.

The answer is simple: no, there isn't.

In this article, we explain transparently how the Free Bike Tour concept works, why we chose this model and why thousands of visitors continue to choose it as a way to discover Lisbon.

What Is a Free Tour?

The Free Tour concept has been around for many years. Originally associated mainly with walking tours, it can now be found in hundreds of cities around the world.

The idea is simple: a guide takes the group along a particular route and, at the end, each participant freely decides how much the guide's work and dedication — or, ultimately, the entire experience — was worth to them. And that is the amount they choose to pay.

There is no fixed price for the guide's service. Each person contributes according to the quality of the experience, the duration of the tour and their own budget.

Instead of paying in advance for something they haven't yet experienced, participants decide for themselves what the experience was worth after enjoying it.

This concept puts the visitor at the heart of the experience, and that is precisely why it has become so popular.

Free Walking Tour vs Free Bike Tour

It was precisely this concept that inspired our founder to create Free Bike Tours Lisbon.

At the time, we were pioneers in Portugal in applying this concept and, as far as we know, one of the first companies in the world to adapt it to bicycle tours.

The philosophy remains exactly the same: provide an excellent experience and let each participant decide, at the end, what they believe is a fair value for the guide's work. It is a model based on trust, freedom of choice and the quality of the experience.

The only difference from a walking tour is, naturally, the bicycle.

Now that we've explained why the guide's service is considered free on a Free Bike Tour, it's time to answer another very common question: is the bicycle free too?

Actually, it depends.

If you join the tour with your own bicycle, there is no cost at all: the tour is completely free.

If you don't have a bicycle, we can provide one, in which case you only need to pay for the bike rental.

Why Do You Have to Pay for the Bike Rental?

The answer is simple: most people who join our tours are visiting Lisbon on holiday and, naturally, don't have a bicycle with them.

It was precisely with these visitors in mind, and to make it easier for them to join our tours, that we complemented our guided experiences with the option to rent a bicycle directly from us.

However, providing this service naturally involves costs — from purchasing the bicycles and their ongoing maintenance to the space needed to store them.

For this reason, anyone who wants to join one of our Free Bike Tours and doesn't have their own bicycle simply pays the corresponding rental fee.

How Are Our Guides Paid?

Our guides on the Free Tours are volunteers and therefore receive no fixed payment for their work on these tours.

Their income comes exclusively from the tips that participants voluntarily choose to leave at the end of each tour.

That is why, rather than simply showing you monuments, our guides aim to provide a truly memorable experience.

They pay particular attention to everyone's safety and comfort, always adapt the pace to the group, answer questions, share stories and interesting facts, offer tips about Lisbon, and try to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone.

Ultimately, this model creates a very simple incentive: the better the experience, the greater the recognition from the participants.

And it is the participants themselves who can best explain why we believe this concept works so well. The vast majority of the reviews we receive highlight exactly what we aim to provide on every tour: knowledge, attention, safety, personal connection and, above all, a fun and memorable experience.

Dora Twin — Airbnb Experiences

"Our bike tour with Silvia was absolutely fantastic!
She did an incredible job keeping my teenagers engaged and genuinely interested in Portugal’s culture.
Her energy and enthusiasm brought every story and landmark in Lisbon to life, making the experience both fun and memorable.
Silvia was also very attentive and made us feel completely safe throughout the tour. She consistently looked out for everyone in the group and ensured our family was comfortable at all times.
I highly recommend this as a fun educating activity in Lisbon — especially for families with teenagers!"

How Much Should I Tip?

This is another question we are often asked, sometimes by email or WhatsApp, even before or shortly after a booking is made.

Our answer is simple and always the same:

There is no compulsory amount.

Each participant is completely free to decide how much they would like to leave, based on the experience they had and, naturally, their own circumstances.

Some people contribute more, others less, and some simply prefer to say thank you for the experience.

Naturally, our guides are always very happy to receive a tip. Besides the financial reward, it is also a way of recognising their work, dedication and commitment.

But it is precisely the freedom for each person to decide what they consider fair that lies at the heart of the Free Tour concept.

What matters most to us and to our guides is that every participant finishes the tour happy, feeling that they have discovered Lisbon in a unique way and taking home great memories of the time they spent with us.

Sometimes, our guests explain the concept better than we do.

“Cynthia was awesome! This tour is worth it! You pay a smaller fee for the bike rental for the 4 hour ride and tour and then tip your guide! It was very informative and nice to be able to see so many things and such a distance you can’t see when just walking! Book it if you like physical activity and hands on experiences!”

Why Did We Choose This Model?

Because we love this city and we love sharing it with others.

Because we love cycling — even more when we do it in good company.

Because we believe in sustainable tourism, not only environmentally but also economically and socially, making experiences accessible to as many people as possible.

And, perhaps most importantly, because we love freedom, we like being happy and we enjoy contributing to the happiness of others.

With all that in mind, the Free Bike Tour concept fits our way of thinking perfectly.

As well as being environmentally sustainable and inclusive, this model allows visitors to join without worrying about paying for the tour in advance while, at the same time, challenging us every day to maintain a high standard of quality.

Every group is different.

Every tour is different.

And, above all, every person is an individual.

And every day is a new opportunity to provide an experience worth recommending.

That commitment helps explain why so many people come back, recommend us to friends and family, and leave such positive reviews about the experiences they have shared with us.
