The year 2025 was truly unforgettable. I completed three international bike trips that took me through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in South America and the Iberian Peninsula.
Between ancient trails, mountain descents, desert crossings and spiritual routes, each destination offered a unique experience that strengthened my passion for cycle touring.
Below, I share a detailed account of the three routes I cycled: Peru, Bolivia, and the Portuguese Coastal Camino de Santiago.

Why cycle in Peru in 2025?
Peru is one of the most complete destinations for cyclists looking for adventure, culture and history. Its bike routes combine altitude, thousand-year-old heritage and scenic trails that suit riders seeking moderate to intense challenges.
My experience in Lima
I spent three days in Lima, exploring the city by bike. I cycled along the Malecón overlooking the Pacific Ocean and visited Miraflores and Barranco — lively neighbourhoods known for their food scene and street art. It was the perfect warm-up before heading into higher altitudes.
Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas
The core of the adventure began in Cusco, where I started a one-week cycling journey through the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Over seven days, I rode through small villages (Ollantaytambo, Misminay), archaeological sites (Maras Salines and Moray) and mountain landscapes marked by Inca history.
Long climbs, technical descents and dirt roads created one of the most complete routes I’ve ever ridden in South America.
An unforgettable arrival at Machu Picchu
The highlight of the trip was arriving at Machu Picchu. No photo can capture the feeling of reaching the ancient city after days of effort. It was emotional, rewarding and one of the greatest moments of my cycling life.

Pedalling around Lake Titicaca
My journey began at Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable salt lake in the world. Riding there is a mix of effort and reward: the thin air makes every climb harder, but the panoramic views are worth every pedal stroke.
Uyuni Salt Flats: the most surreal cycling experience
Cycling across the Uyuni Salt Flats was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. The endless white horizon creates a unique visual effect, giving the impression of riding through a dreamlike world.
Dakar trails and the legendary Death Road
I then rode parts of the routes used in the Dakar Rally, where gravel, sand and unpredictable terrain require focus and technique.
To finish, I descended the famous Death Road (Yungas Road) — one of the world’s most iconic cycling routes. With proper caution and equipment, the descent is safe, thrilling and absolutely unforgettable.

Arriving in Santiago de Compostela
Reaching the Obradoiro Square in Santiago de Compostela is always special. The sound of bagpipes, the atmosphere of pilgrimage and the sense of accomplishment make this route one of the best cycling experiences in Europe.
