Kyoto – The Samurai City by Bike.

Kyoto, known as the old capital or Samurai city, was founded in the SEC.I.

For eleven centuries, until 1868, this city was the capital of Japan, for that reason, throughout that period, it was the scene of several revolutions and wars, which, along with some earthquakes that occurred here, left traces.

However, through the intervention of the US Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson, who was there on his honeymoon and on several diplomatic visits, this city was removed from the list of places where the atomic bomb should be dropped during WWII.

This intervention by Stimson saved Kyoto, instead of other cities, from its total destruction.

With that fact and with its long and rich tradition this city is the cultural center of Japan.

With over 2000 religious sites - 1600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto temples, as well as palaces, gardens and intact architecture - it is one of the best preserved cities in Japan.

About 20% of Japan's National Treasures and 14% of Important Cultural Properties are in Kyoto.

The Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto are UNESCO World Heritage Sites that include 17 sites in Kyoto and Uji and Ōtsu.

In addition to all this cultural heritage, Kyoto also has impressive natural beauty.

Passing through its wonderful gardens, or bamboo forest, is a unique and unforgettable experience.
