There are times of the year when nature seems to add something special to our experiences.
From September until early November, the days gradually begin to get shorter.
For those exploring places like Sintra or Arrábida by bike, this brings a little surprise: the possibility of ending the day in some of the most beautiful light of the year.
The sun begins to set earlier over the Atlantic, the light becomes softer and warmer, and the landscape takes on completely different colours.
Golden Hour.
A different kind of light

As summer comes to an end and the days begin to shorten, the landscape slowly starts to change.
The intense summer light gives way to softer, golden tones.

The greens of nature gradually begin to blend with other colours, while the ocean reflects the light of the late afternoon.
And as we approach the Atlantic, this transformation becomes even more striking.
On our Sintra–Cascais e-bike tour, after crossing the mountains and making our way towards the coast, we spend the final moments of the day by the sea.
In Cascais, the sun slowly approaches the horizon and the deep blue of the Atlantic becomes a vast canvas, reflecting the golden, orange, pink and red tones of the sky.
For a few moments, the sea and the sky seem to merge. The colours blend and change from one minute to the next, while the golden light surrounds the landscape, the bikes and the people.
Something similar happens in Arrábida.
Between the mountains, vineyards and beaches, we meet the Atlantic once again and, towards the end of the day, the blue of the ocean takes on the warm colours of the sky.
The landscapes are different, but at this time of year they share something very special: the spectacle of watching the sun slowly disappear over the Atlantic.
And there is no need to change the route or deliberately go looking for the sunset.
It simply happens.
A bonus from nature

Our Sintra–Cascais and Arrábida tours are full-day experiences.
They were designed to give us time to truly discover these places: to cycle, stop, enjoy the landscape, explore small towns and villages, taste local flavours and enjoy the journey without turning the day into a race against the clock.
But at this time of year, there is something we cannot include in the itinerary or guarantee when you book.
Sometimes, nature offers us one final special moment.
After a day spent among mountains, quiet roads, small towns and villages, beaches and views over the Atlantic, the final kilometres of the ride can coincide with the moment when the sun begins to disappear below the horizon.
And what would simply have been the end of a great day on the bike suddenly becomes, almost without warning and as if by magic, one of its most memorable moments.
September: when the days begin to change

There are many reasons to explore Sintra and Arrábida throughout the year, with each season offering a different experience.
After the summer months, when we sometimes stop along the way for a swim in the ocean, temperatures remain very pleasant for cycling. These places become quieter, with fewer people around, and the landscape itself slowly begins to change.
But there is another very simple reason:
the light.
Between September and early November, the timing of our full-day tours naturally begins to bring us closer to Golden Hour.
We don't offer sunset tours.
We can't promise a perfect sky.
And we certainly can't choose the colours we are going to find.
One evening may be filled with gold and orange. On another, the sky may turn pink and red above the blue of the Atlantic.
We never know exactly what nature is going to give us.
And perhaps that is precisely what makes these moments so special.
The tour is ours.
The sunset is nature's bonus.

And when we are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, there are moments that deserve to be celebrated.
We stop for a while as the final colours of the day are reflected across the Atlantic, raise our glasses and make a toast to the sun disappearing over the horizon.
A toast to life, and to the privilege of being there to see it.
